Things to Know Before You Shop
There are certain guidelines to choosing the right hardwood floor for your home. One of the best places to start is with a good installer's input. It would be a shame to bring home a load of flooring only to find that you can't use it because of the sub floor or the grade area you were thinking of putting it in. For example, bathrooms with hardwood are not typical, but a half bath with engineered wood would be okay.
Starting with this information, next you can chose from:
3/4" Solid Hardwood -Some 5 or 9/16 Solid and 5/8"
3/8" or 5/8" Engineered Wood
Regular tongue and grove or click lock
Bamboo or Cork
Random or Consistent lengths and widths
Exotic or Domestic Woods
But you aren’t finished just yet. There are other choices to make, like whether to lay straight or diagonal or a boarder. It's easy to see why a little guidance would be helpful. Don’t worry-- our experts are only a call or email away. You can always ask for professional advice when you need it!
Beauty in the Details
There are a few small details you should always remember to consider when it comes to hardwood. Checking the level of your floor and the undercutting of your door jambs should be considered. Plus the proper transitions to the flooring in the adjoining rooms is important along with any door heights clearance.
Moisture is a key factor when installing on or below grade. A moisture barrier should be applied before any install if there is dampness in your crawl space or basement. Don't sell yourself short on having it done right. It is well worth the work when the beauty of your hardwood floors last a lifetime.
Look at your manufacturer's recommendations ahead of time or you may void some of the warranties on your floor. Some are only 5 years, but others are in the 50 year range. The warranties for prefinished wood that was professionally installed are much longer than unfinished wood that you installed yourself. Knowing the differences can save money in the long run. Prevent mistakes that need repairs or replacements that are not covered by your warranty and follow manufacturer instructions carefully.
There are several finishes available. Some may prefer the smooth shiny or matte look. Others may prefer the rustic appearance of hand scraped, distressed, or even wire brushed look. Width is also a factor. The 2 1/4" wide has now lost popularity to much wider boards, 5" and even more. The wider widths usually require a better grade wood, especially in solids. This may increase the cost. The benefit is that wider planks can be installed faster, which is especially helpful in a large area.
Different qualities of wood may go by different names. Clear or select grade planks have less knots and look cleaner. Cabin (or “millwork”) grade shows the variations in the wood with more knots visible. A hardness rating of at least that of red oak (1290) is prefered. Some finishes applied can get a higher Janka rating. This means less dents or scrapes showing. All hard surface flooring recommends that the furniture legs have soft pads on them to protect your investment. Solid hardwood can be refinished, including some engineered types if you follow the manufacturer's guide. A lot of hardwood is rated even harder than red oak. That is why quality and prices vary much between products. See the Janka rating scale for more information along that line.
